Phrygian Hat is soft conical hat with the apex bent over.  It was worn in ancient times, including in the early Hellenistic and Roman worlds. In late Republican Rome, a soft felt cap called the pileus served as a symbol of freemen (i.e. non-slaves). This hat became the liberty hat worn during the French revolution.
