The Roman tunic was adopted by the Roman citizens in the 3rd century BC. It was often worn by citizens and non-citizens alike. The length of the garment would indicate the wearer's status in Roman society. Soldiers, slaves and manual workers generally had tunics to a little above the knee while those in more sedentary occupations to about the ankle. Tunic's were often adorned with stripes, trims, and details that expressed the wearers station.
