Custom-Made Amice
The Amice was thought to have orginated as a man's garment, during the time of imperial Rome (first century). It was a white linen kerchief that was worn around the neck and shoulders. Worn underneath their clothing, its purpose was to avoid ring around the collar. In the year 775 (according to Ordo Romanus), the Amice became a vestment of ritual for the clergy. In the 11th century it was worn on the head. Priests would commonly say a prayer with the Amice on his head before wearing it around his shoulders.
This garment eventually became the white collar we see some clergy wear today.
The Amice was also called a superhumerale in Anglo-Saxon England.
Made from medium weight cotton or cotton blend fabric.
Trim can be added to the collar.
